# Customizing dashboards

> Tune dashboard-wide alignment, save behavior, date range, and filters — plus where to find style settings and widget layout.

Building a dashboard means both the per-widget setup (metrics, breakdowns, data sources) and the dashboard-wide options that shape how the whole surface behaves. This page covers the dashboard-level side.

For adding, moving, resizing, or removing individual widgets, see [Widget layout](/dashboards/building/widget-layout). For per-widget settings, see the [Widget library](/widgets/widget-library/overview).

## Dashboard style settings

Everything visual — background, background image, widget alignment mode, page breaks for report mode, cover page toggle, and every default widget style (font, border, drop shadow, color scheme, and more) — lives in the dashboard's style drawer. See [Dashboard style settings](/dashboards/building/dashboard-style-settings) for the full inventory and how to configure each option.

## Vertical vs custom alignment

Widget alignment is set inside [Dashboard style settings](/dashboards/building/dashboard-style-settings). The two modes:

| Mode | Behavior |
| ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Vertical** (default) | Widgets auto-stack in the order they were added. Move and resize still work, but layout snaps back to vertical order after each change. |
| **Custom** | Widgets stay wherever they were dropped. Dragging a widget into an occupied space pushes the existing widget down instead of snapping. |

Use vertical for simple list-style dashboards. Use custom for branded layouts where exact placement matters (executive dashboards, client reports). Custom alignment is also required to insert page breaks for [Report creation](/dashboards/building/report-creation).

## Set the date range and filters

Set the dashboard's date range from the date picker in the header. Dashboard-wide filters (for example, campaign status or channel) apply across every widget. Individual widgets can override the dashboard date range in their own settings.

For details, see [Filters](/dashboards/filters-and-dates/filters) and [Adjusting date ranges](/dashboards/filters-and-dates/date-ranges).

## Save behavior

To apply any changes, click **Save dashboard**.

For cloning the entire dashboard rather than saving in place, see the **Duplicate** action in the dashboard's context menu (right-click the dashboard name in the sidebar). For **Save dashboard** vs **Save as a new dashboard** vs **Duplicate**, see [Dashboard overview](/dashboards/overview).

## Add, move, or remove widgets

For the widget-level flow — adding widgets from the catalog, dragging widgets on the grid, resizing, removing, and moving between report-mode pages — see [Widget layout](/dashboards/building/widget-layout).

## If a widget looks stale after changes

If a value looks wrong or stale after changing settings, click **Refresh data** in the dashboard header — it bypasses cached results and re-fetches from the source. A browser refresh alone only re-renders cached data.
