# How to connect

> How to connect the SmartNews Ads data source to Adriel: enter SmartNews-issued API credentials, select an advertiser, and verify data.

SmartNews Ads is the native advertising platform inside SmartNews, a news aggregator app popular in Japan and the United States. Connecting it brings campaign, ad-group, and ad performance into Adriel dashboards at daily granularity, alongside spend, impressions, viewable impressions, clicks, conversions, installs, and in-app events.

## Before you connect

The following are required:

* An active SmartNews Ads advertiser account.
* API access provisioned for that advertiser by the SmartNews account team.
* The API credentials issued by SmartNews for the advertiser, gathered before starting the connection.

## What gets imported

The connector pulls campaign, ad-group, and ad performance from the SmartNews Insights API at daily granularity, in the advertiser's billing currency (typically JPY). Metrics include spend, impressions, viewable impressions, clicks, conversions, installs, and in-app events, alongside derived rates such as CTR, CPC, and CPM. Supported campaign objectives include TRAFFIC, SALES, AWARENESS, and APP\_PROMOTION, with creative formats spanning image, video, carousel, and catalog units.

Confirm with the SmartNews account team that API access has been provisioned for the advertiser, and that the credentials match the advertiser whose data is being requested.

<Accordion title="CPC or CPM looks inconsistent across campaigns">
SmartNews campaigns can bill on click or on viewable impression. Spend is reported consistently across both, but effective cost-per-action interpretation depends on each campaign's billing event. Split reports by billing event before comparing efficiency.

<Accordion title="Older data is missing for a long date range">
Look-back is capped by the reporting granularity: up to 93 days for daily, up to one year for weekly, and up to two years for monthly. Use a coarser granularity to reach further back.
